April 2012 Meeting – Chris Sora

26 Apr

At the Toronto Potters meeting last evening Chris Sora demonstrated the making of Japanese tea bowls.

Chris Sora is a third generation Japanese-Canadian trained as a chemical engineer, who has been potting for more than twenty years.  Recently retired, he has studied and collected pottery, woodblock prints, Buddhist statuary, Zen calligraphy, swords, armour, furniture and cinema in pursuing his curiosity about his own heritage.  As well, he is accomplished in both the art of iaido or Japanese swordsmanship and kyudo or Japanese archery.

Functional art pottery is Chris’ primary medium of expression but his work also encompasses wearable and non-functional cone 6 oxidation or wood fired ceramics. His award-winning pottery has been exhibited at Potters’ Guild of Hamilton and Region juried biennial and is retailed in shops in Niagara on the Lake and Toronto.
